| I do indeed remember the incident. It happened not far from Vinh Long at a place known as DeGaule's Nose, so called because the bend in the stream there resembles the cartoon charicatures of the French President's profile. I flew two sorties against a previously unknown complex there and took either two or three hits. One hit was a .51cal. straight into the prop about a foot from the hub. The other was another head on shot which I recall as having taken a piece of pie shape out of my right aileron. Of those two I'm certain. The third, also a head on shot through the vertical stabilizer I may have confused from another event but I don't think so. I got all the hits making rocket attacks. I remember lots of tracer passing over, under, right and left. I don't remember exactly, but I do remember calling for Cobras. think we departed the scene for fuel before the Cobras got there. I hreard they got into a hell of a punch-up. I was also told the Air Force had to finish the job with air strikes. When infantry was able to get in, they found a munitions factory or supply depot or both. I DO remember having one of our guys with me on at least one of the sorties. I apologize for not remembering his name. Perhaps he will remember my crew chief from Ben Tre, Rex Izumi, or Jim "Smitty" Smith, my crew chief in Cao Lanh. I don't think I had taken over a platoon yet when this happened. I think I was the Sa Dec sector pilot with additional duty as supply officer, which I hated. Fortunately, I had Sgt. Bailey to carry me in the job. Our CO, when I first got to Vinh Long was Maj. King. I never got to know him very well. He was followed by Maj. Jackie D. Catt, a school teacher from Arkansas, and one of the finest men I've ever known. I ran into him after my second tour. He was Chief of the Leadership Dept. at the Infantry School at Ft. Benning. I was with the 74th RAC in Phu Loi my second tour and got shot down twice in 24 hours. There was even a funny article about it in Stars and Stripes entitled "How Lucky Can You Get? Ask Bowers". |
